From Highways to Homes: Honoring America’s Truck Drivers
Every year, the American Trucking Associations (ATA) invites all Americans to participate in National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, a vital reminder of the crucial role professional truck drivers play in our daily lives. In 2025, NTDAW will run from Sunday, September 14 to Saturday, September 20, under the theme “From Highways to Homes: Honoring America’s Truck Drivers.”
Why This Week Matters
The title “From Highways to Homes” perfectly captures the heart of NTDAW. Every item we purchase, from fresh produce to medical supplies and electronics, relies on the quiet dedication of over 3.5 million professional truck drivers. Beyond just moving goods, these men and women navigate fatigue, weather, tight deadlines, and safety obligations, ensuring our highways remain safe and our shelves stay stocked.
ATA emphasizes that NTDAW isn’t just a symbolic gesture; it’s a collective, national recognition of this indispensable workforce. Whether it’s waving at a passing rig, sending a “thank you” on social media, or offering free coffee and snacks at a local truck stop, small acts of gratitude can go a long way.
A Rich History of Recognition
NTDAW started back in 1988 under the ATA’s sponsorship, with a mission to formally recognize the tireless efforts of truck drivers. Over nearly four decades, it has become a cornerstone of social and corporate campaigns: Penske Logistics, for example, routinely posts video messages, hosts giveaways, and spotlights heroic driver stories during this week, affirming that honors go far beyond mere thank-you posts.
National Scale, Local Impact
While the celebration is national, its impact is intensely local. ATA encourages communities, organizations, and individuals to join the effort through its social media toolkit, which includes official hashtags like #NTDAW25 and graphics for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube. The toolkit also offers sample messages and press release templates, making it easy for local businesses, schools, or families to participate.
Communities often reciprocate. Truck stops, local diners, municipalities, and charities host breakfasts, roadside salute events, and “free treats” to show appreciation, creating meaningful moments of human connection at the roadside.
Beyond Gratitude: A Call to Action
NTDAW isn’t only about saying thanks, it’s also an invitation to consider what drivers face every day. Long hours, health challenges, parking shortages, and safety risks are all part of the job. ATA and its supporters advocate for structural improvements, including better rest areas, enhanced access to healthy food and healthcare, and greater respect for drivers’ schedules and safety.
This year, ATA is also targeting sector-wide dialogues around driver shortages, diversity and inclusion (including greater representation of women), and advanced safety technologies. NTDAW provides an ideal opportunity to highlight these issues in local and national media.
How You Can Participate
Here are a few simple yet powerful ways to get involved:
- Say “Thank you” in-person: Wave or stop by a truck stop. Feedback is welcome!
- Use social media: Share photos or stories with #NTDAW25 and #ThankATrucker.
- Organize a local event: Partner with a diner or charity to host a breakfast or supply drive.
- Advocate: Ask local leaders about investing in trucker rest area improvements or improving access to health services.
National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is more than a social media trend. It’s an essential reminder: every household in America, from the largest city skyscraper to the smallest rural farm, depends on the dedication of professional truck drivers. Their commitment keeps our economy rolling and ensures that the everyday and extraordinary moments we cherish are made possible. This September 14–20, take a moment to thank a driver, because gratitude, in this case, goes a long way home.
