Operation Safe Driver Week: What Truck Drivers and Fleets Need to Know for July 13–19, 2025
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has officially scheduled this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week for July 13–19, 2025, marking another vital opportunity for commercial drivers and fleet managers to focus on road safety, compliance, and professionalism behind the wheel. This annual initiative spans across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico and is designed to reduce unsafe driving behaviors through proactive education and traffic enforcement efforts.
What Is Operation Safe Driver Week?
Operation Safe Driver Week is a dedicated seven-day enforcement and outreach campaign aimed at addressing unsafe driving behavior. It’s not just about tickets; this week serves as a high-impact educational push to create safer highways by encouraging better decisions on the road. During this time, law enforcement officers will be on high alert, monitoring both commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers for risky behaviors, including:
- Speeding
- Distracted driving
- Following too closely
- Impaired driving (drugs or alcohol)
- Aggressive or reckless maneuvers
- Lane violations and unsafe passing
Those caught violating traffic laws may receive warnings or citations on the spot.
2025’s Focus: Reckless, Careless, or Dangerous Driving
Each year, CVSA emphasizes a specific area of concern based on trends and crash data. This year’s campaign is highlighting reckless, careless, and dangerous driving. According to the CVSA, reckless driving refers to operating a vehicle in a manner that demonstrates a willful disregard for the safety of others. Careless or dangerous driving, on the other hand, typically stems from inattentiveness or a failure to consider the safety of other motorists.
Why this focus? Because the numbers are alarming. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 42,514 people lost their lives in traffic crashes in 2022. Canada reported 1,931 fatalities, and Mexico saw 15,979 road deaths in the same year. These are not just statistics; they are lives lost due to preventable behaviors.
What Truck Drivers and Fleet Managers Should Do
Whether you’re an owner-operator or managing a fleet of dozens, Operation Safe Driver Week is a chance to reset and reinforce safe driving practices. Here’s how you can prepare:
- Review your driver safety policies and ensure that every driver is aware of what is expected of them.
- Conduct internal safety audits or pre-checks to make sure vehicles are in proper condition.
- Offer driver refresher training, especially on defensive driving, speed management, and proper following distances.
- Communicate the dates and focus of this year’s campaign with all driving personnel so they’re not caught off guard.
Proactive engagement before the campaign begins can help your business avoid citations and keep everyone safer on the road.
CVSA’s Resources for Drivers and the Public
In addition to enforcement, CVSA emphasizes education as a key pillar of Operation Safe Driver Week. The organization offers downloadable resources specifically designed for teen drivers, new drivers, and commercial vehicle operators. Public service announcement (PSA) videos are available to help spread the word, and free postcards (in English, French, and Spanish) are also being distributed to enforcement and industry members.
These resources help reinforce the campaign’s broader message: safe driving isn’t seasonal, it’s essential.
Operation Safe Driver Week is more than just a traffic enforcement event; it’s a powerful reminder of the shared responsibility we all have on the road. For commercial drivers, who spend more time on highways than most, that responsibility is even greater. Use this week as an opportunity to recommit to safety, avoid unnecessary violations, and ultimately, save lives.
Stay safe, stay informed, and drive responsibly. July 13–19 is right around the corner.
